Memories, Schemories

Written By: Sy - Aug• 10•11

My wife just came into the living room to show me how she scanned all of these family pictures into her flickr account and said we should play them on the tv when the family comes over. Of course, I’m sure everyone would enjoy that, even me for about five seconds.

I’ve never been a person picture person. I like pictures of things and glimpses back into history, but as people pictures go I’ve never even carried a picture of either of my children or my wife, or even a girlfriend for that matter. My high school girlfriend, Eva, even asked me one time why I didn’t carry a picture of her and I told her, “I don’t have to. I know what you look like.”

I see people at work (almost everyone) who have pictures of their wives, husbands and kids, sitting out on their desks, one guy even has just two pictures of his dog, why? I could never imagine myself doing that.

I have a sister-in-law who is constantly at it with the fuckin’ camera at every family gathering, documenting everything and I always walk away when I see her coming and she’ll make remarks to me like “OK, Mr. Gotti, sorry.”

She almost got me in this picture from 2003.

The only pictures that really, actually, hold my attention are pictures of my mom when she was younger, but not the ones when she’s older. Strange.

But I really don’t have much interest in looking back, I’m always more interested in what’s going to happen next. Maybe one day I’ll regret not having more memories documented, but honestly, I doubt it. When it gets to that point I’m sure I’ll regret not having more time to look forward to more than anything else.

Mmm.. Just one thing, about the only pictures that hold your attention being pictures of your mom when she was younger: Oedipus Complex much don’t you think? She is your first object of desire, your first love, you knew her even before you knew yourself, so yup that’s prob the reason for the strange fascination. Just saying…

I don’t know. Those words are too big for me. Whatever you say I’m good with. It’s more fun to take cracks at other people.

People take pictures of you because they love you or hate you. One of the two 😀

Besides, I bet your kids enjoy pictures of you. Even recent hand-over-face pictures of you. (But I bet they’d rather see your face)
