I Was Only Trying to Help

Written By: Sy - Dec• 31•10

A guy I used to work with confided in me that his father was verbally abusive to him when he was in his teens, not before and not to his siblings. Only during that time and only to him.

He said that his father never had a good word to say about him and it was to the point, that this person said he planned on severing all ties with his father in the near future.

This conversation made me uncomfortable and I didn’t know exactly what to say, so I did what I usually do and made light of the situation.

I told him that “I’m not trying to defend your father, but if it makes you feel any better, I can’t really think of anything good to say about you either.”

In my own way, I was only trying to help.

“Hey, I remember how your dad used to dump on you too, but you just shrugged it off.”

“I know, I never took it personally. I already had that whole father/son thing figured out.”

“How did you do that?”

“I watched the Star Wars trilogy, “Come to the dark side, Luke.” “Sorry, dad, I have other plans.”
